An Story of Surprising Kindness: When a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground
Back in 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for a medical school interview. I figured I would book accommodation when I arrived, however when I arrived, a large conference was in town and all the youth hostels and cheap hotels had no vacancies.
As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I thought perhaps I could spend the night at the terminal – only to discover that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes around the clock. Not knowing how to proceed and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded a bus into town and began walking towards a gaming venue, believing I could pass the evening somewhere operating 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition for acing a crucial interview the following day, yet, as a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
We could all use more individuals with such compassion.
Apparently, I appeared confused as a female student saw me wandering around the city center and wondered whether I needed help. I recounted the story of my accommodation crisis and without hesitation she suggested I could crash on the floor of her dormitory at the local university – which was perfect, considering that was where my medical school interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided me some free dinner: one sandwiches she had from her part-time job. This gave me a hot shower and a secure location and secure to sleep.
In retrospect, I now understand the significant risk she took as a woman letting a guy she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. Back then I existed within my own unawareness and was oblivious to the potential danger. Now, as a father, it astounds me she offered that help – and remain incredibly thankful.
Ultimately, I did not study at ANU, and I didn’t meet that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me that incredible gesture of human compassion. It is my wish the universe has rewarded her generosity many times over. We could all use more folks like that woman.
