Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
