Patrick Bamford Signs With Sheffield United Despite Initiating Abusive Chants Targeting Coach Wilder
The striker has joined Sheffield United just seven months after starting disrespectful chants targeting the team's coach, Wilder.
The 32-year-old striker, a free agent after departing from Leeds United, has agreed to a contract joining the second-tier club in difficulty through the winter. Bamford's seven-year spell at Elland Road concluded by mutual consent in August.
Among Bamford’s last memorable actions as a Leeds player included starting offensive songs about Wilder amid the club’s promotion party in April. Currently, the one-cap England international will feature under Wilder as Sheffield United's boss seeks to rescue the team he loves out of the bottom places.
Previous Conflict Between the Striker and the Manager
The pair had history before Leeds earned promotion to the Premier League last season while Sheffield United were defeated in the playoff final to Sunderland. Wilder called Bamford as “a muppet” when the situation was different in 2018-19 and the Blades secured direct promotion while Leeds United missed out in the promotion playoffs.
Making Amends and Moving Forward
All seems to have been forgiven and forgotten with United, the Championship’s lowest scorers, urgently requiring of a boost up front and Bamford hoping to rejuvenate his career.
The song about Wilder went viral this spring. An apologetic Bamford along with Leeds boss, Farke, phoned the Sheffield United manager the following day.
Wilder commented at the time: “Had a conversation with Patrick yesterday and I have no issue whatsoever with that. I’m not sure about the language from a fellow pro! But I valued and respected him giving me a call.
“We spent a short while and the same again I talked with Daniel too and we had a longer discussion with him and he's a great person, a top guy. When I was playing we used to dish it out and accept it and that’s an integral part of the game across all levels, including a Sunday morning. I've got absolutely no issue. I'm fine with it and I told him that to Pat.”
Recent Playing Challenges
Bamford made 18 appearances for Leeds in the previous campaign but the ex- Nottingham Forest, Chelsea & Middlesbrough player has faced difficulties with fitness issues in recent years.
