Edwards along with Gary O'Neil are two of the early candidates under consideration to succeed Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday after the squad's 10-match winless start to the top-flight season.

And Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have historic links to the club - are among the names to be considered by the club leadership.

Edwards is presently at another club, which would pose a potential obstacle to his hiring at Molineux.

Nevertheless the ex- Luton Town manager - who played over a century of games for Wolves during his playing career - is said to be a strong candidate for the position.

The mid-career manager is said to have backing from the Wolves directors as they start the process of hiring a new head coach.

O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, even though he would be a shock appointment given he was sacked by the club in December last year.

The former West Ham midfielder is out of work meaning the club would not be required to provide any compensation.
