The Reds Will Not Alter Attacking Style Amid Current Struggles, Insists Head Coach Slot
The Dutch manager has stated that the club's hierarchy agree with his assessment regarding the recent downturn and he will not abandon their forward-thinking philosophy in pursuit of a turnaround. The head coach admitted that six defeats in seven matches was unacceptable ahead of Aston Villa's visit.
Growing Expectations During Challenging Phase
Slot accepted the expectations were high before his makeshift team were eliminated from the Carabao Cup against the London club. However, he insisted that this pressure to arrest the slide is not coming from the team's proprietors or football administration following a summer transfer outlay of approximately £450 million.
"They say similar things," commented Slot, whose team next week face the Spanish giants in the European competition and play against Manchester City in the domestic competition.
Squad Quality Remains Unchallenged
Liverpool's manager thinks his team "have an unbelievable squad if they are all fit and completely set for the fixture list". He said that the transfer window acquisitions in footballers like the attacking midfielder and the Swedish striker, who is probably unavailable again against the Birmingham club through injury, had left the club "in a strong situation for the short-term future and the years to come".
Integration Challenges
When pressed on why his team were struggling to integrate, he replied: "That's not particularly helpful. 'What are the reasons?' I provide reasons and people say I'm offering alibis. I can list multiple factors why we are not winning as much or experiencing losses as we do but, as I say every time, there are inadequate reasons to have a run of form as we had now."
- Even if I could list 200 excuses
- When you are Liverpool you cannot lose
- Unfortunately six losses from seven matches
Defensive Numbers
Only the Clarets (21) have faced more big chances from open play this season than the Merseysiders (19). The league leaders, Arsenal, have conceded only two. Yet Slot denies the team has been overly exposed and asserts there is no reason to compromise forward-thinking approach for a cautious system after ten fixtures without a shutout.
"From my perspective we don't allowing many opportunities so I find no basis to change our playing style totally but we need to do better in keeping clean sheets," he said.
Specific Instances
"Against Manchester United, how many chances did we concede? When playing Frankfurt when we were ahead by two goals, we scarcely gave up a attempt on goal. In every match we have played so far we haven't given up a lot of chances. Definitely not. We do concede a somewhat more than the previous campaign but that has to do with us being behind early so you take a bit more risk. But in general I don't believe that our issue is that we concede too many chances. Our challenge is we fail to convert the openings we produce."
